The Graduate

Just wanted to share with you that my scholar Rose just graduated from nursing school. Rose is the daughter of our long-time helper of 30 years, who is by the way still with my parents. I hope Rose can go to the US eventually, so I'll have another reason to visit the US:-)

Hey, you have scholars as well? One of mine graduated last year. So proud of her. Sweet, sensible, did it all for her mom and siblings.

Hey D! It feels good doesn't it, knowing that we are instrumental in giving them a good future.

Congratulations Reggie (and Sweet D too)! How did you do it? I tried with 3 of my employees - 1 finished her HS but didn't want to continue, the other 2 in college just didn't have enough drive maybe so they quit. I let them go to school half day, without any deduction from their salary. And still...

Hey SC! I didn't have any secret. I guess my scholar was just determined to finish her schooling and help her family:-)

SC, like Reggie's Rose, my scholars were/are determined and sensible teens. Made sure they understood that I'd be happy to pay for their college-related expenses as long as they earn a passing mark in every subject AND graduate within a reasonable time frame.

Otherwise, I'd yank their scholarship. No excuses, no second chances. That's what I told them. Ang hindi nila alam, of course I'd listen first to the reason for their poor performance before deciding whether or not to continue any financial support.

Your head and heart are in the right place, and there are many other deserving kids out there who cannot afford an education. It won't be hard to find scholars worthy of your support. Good luck!
